So, were playing this roadhouse on the edge of town, and Earl does his pirate saunter right up into my
face and says, he says, Youre the Glove, man, you are the G-l-o-v-e.
Earl, what the fuck are you talking about?
You know, the Glove
ha ha ha ha, Yeah!
Ians journey to gloveness has been long and unwitting. It all began in a remote valley in the southern
Cascades. Ian would watch his Grampa serenade the elk and owls with violin selections from Carmen,
while the three workdogs would howl an accompaniment that sounded fairly rehearsed.
Grampa taught me that people make music. People like you and me.
So Ian took cornet lessons, trombone lessons, and sax lessons. Grampa even gave Ian a silver-plated
C-melody saxophone (circa 1924) that Grampa had played in dance halls up and down the West Coast
in the 1930s and 40s.
I wanted to go to Julliard
Then I heard KISS
I needed to rock. Then I heard Ramble On, and knew
that I wanted to play bass. So I did. Still do.
Ian started playing bass at age 17. There was the high school punk band (the E*L*V*Es),
The college cover band (The Ethnocentrics), the more mature, original pop band (Schwa),
followed by a string of West Coast thrash-funk bands, starting with Rubberhead in Eugene, Oregon.
Eugene had too many hippies, so Ian moved to the Bay Area to play in Mr. Bones, which morphed into
Funnelhead, who died in the abyss of pay-to-play venues
Back in Portland, Ian found a community of friendlier, less financially driven musicians, and
re-discovered the fun in ensemble performance, playing a role in the harmonic whole.
So, when The Meat' rang me up for an audition...a no-brainer, We Got The Meat is all about fun!
Ian is currently involved in several other bands, including Los Placemats, the Rose City Meds, and
Sevrin. He also recently finished another soundtrack for another indie filmmaker, and is currently
available for more soundtrack work.
